NYU-Princeton Workshop on Future Electricity Grids and Energy Markets with Decarbonization

About

Our Aim: To bring together academics and practitioners in France and the US to discuss modern and future electricity production as grids transition to majority renewables and nuclear energy sources for purposes of decarbonization. As countries attempt to move towards an net-zero carbon emissions electric grid, new challenges arise, including the uncertainty introduced by intermittency of solar and wind production; the short lifetimes of battery storage; and how carbon emissions can optimally be reduced while meeting increasing demand for electricity, for instance due to needs from AI computation and cooling of data centers. A goal of this workshop, through lectures and panel discussions, is to introduce practical issues where applied mathematics and engineering researchers can play a role.

Some questions to be addressed:

  • How to develop the electric grid to face new structure of power generation/consumption ? In the context of  nodal prices (implying individual investment in the network) and zonal prices (with pooled investments) What is the best pricing model to incite investment in network ?
  • Study different structures : vertical integration vs. separation between production, transportation, distribution, commercialization
  • How to ensure the viability of all players in the energy markets ? 
  • How to ensure the “right” investments to achieve decarbonization objectives?
