Mechanisms for Increasing the Efficiency of Electricity Markets

Abstract: Current market mechanisms for electricity allow for inefficiencies from their inability to match both forward quantities and prices and their precluding contingent across time and geography.  Increases in intermittent renewable generation and geographically flexible data processing loads exacerbate these inefficiencies. This talk will describe the inherent deficiencies in current day-ahead energy and periodic transmission markets and will describe enhanced mechanisms with contingent claims that have the potential for removing inefficiencies.
