Bio:

After starting his career as an engineer with EDF in nuclear power plants, Marc moved into the field of optimizing the electricity supply-demand balance. He held a variety of operational and management positions in the entity in charge of optimizing EDF's physical assets in France and their valuation on wholesale markets. He also headed an R&D department in charge of developing the calculation codes used by EDF to optimize its asset portfolio and for studying market risk management methods. He is currently Risk Director of EDF's Upstream-Downstream Optimization and Trading Division. 

 

Abstract : 

The European Union has embarked on an ambitious path of economic decarbonization, with the aim of achieving zero-carbon emissions by 2050. 

This implies a major shift in the energy system, with intensive electrification of energy uses, and a profound transformation of the electricity system.

The technical challenges are numerous, notably in managing the intermittency of renewable energies, and developing the long-term storage techniques that will be needed.

But the biggest challenge facing power system players is not technical, but economic. Successful transformation of the power system also requires in-depth work on market design, which is not receiving sufficient attention from European policymakers. The mathematical modeling of the interaction of economic agents in electrical systems plays a crucial role in understanding and anticipating the long-term consequences of regulations.
